Toen de Amerikaanse dichteres Emily Dickinson stierf in 1886, vijfenvijftig jaar oud, vond haar zuster Lavinia een doos met papieren, waaronder ca. 1500 gedichten. Daarvan waren er zo`n achthonderd verzameld in veertig zelfgemaakte handschriftbundels. Deze literaire boedel raakte verstrooid, al werden een aantal selecties uit haar poëzie gepubliceerd. Zelf had ze publicatie nooit gezocht. Pas in 1955 verscheen de eerste complete uitgave, The Poems of Emily Dickinson, samengesteld door Thomas Johnson en bestaande uit 1775 gedichten. Hiermee begon Dickinsons faam pas goed. Er kwam een stroom publicaties op gang over haar werk die tot op heden toeneemt in omvang. In 1998 verscheen een nieuwe editie, geredigeerd door R.W. Franklin. Al eerder had Franklin de volgorde van de handschriftbundels gereconstrueerd en op die ordening van de dichteres zelf heeft vertaler Peter Verstegen zijn uitgave van Dickinsons Gedichten in Nederlandse vertaling gebaseerd. Verstegen, bekend als vertaler van Baudelaire, Dante, Milton, Rilke, Shakespeare en Verlaine, heeft voor deze eerste bundel een keuze gemaakt uit de handschriftbundels die dateren uit de periode 1858�"“1864. Een tweede bundel met een selectie uit de poëzie van de jaren 1865�"“1886 zal verschijnen in het voorjaar van 2007. Nooit eerder verscheen in het Nederlands een zo ruime selectie uit Dickinsons werk. Met trots presenteren wij deze vertalingen die zoveel mogelijk recht doen aan de versmelting van inhoud en vorm, tot uiting komend in haar uitzonderlijke woordkeus, haar onconventioneel (half)rijm en haar dwingende metriek. Verstegen schreef bovendien commentaren bij de afzonderlijke gedichten die kunnen bijdragen aan het begrip van deze poëzie met haar soms moeilijk achterhaalbare associaties. 'Dit boek is voor mij het rijkste boek van het jaar, niet alleen door de vaak zeer goede vertalingen, maar ook door het bewonderenswaardig zakelijke en daarom ook voorbeeldige commentaar dat bij ieder gedicht wordt gegeven.
